would a wet set with large rollers straighten her hair as she does not want to use heated appliances on it

It would soften the curls but not straighten. You have to use a straightening iron with a shine/thermal spray. The spray protects the hair from the heat and helps with resistant hair (which hers would be). Hope this helps.
