nowadays many company come up with different ways to straight hair like perm solution or straightening creamy application. depending on your hair texture, the result can be different. i don't think side effect is common unless you have a very sensitive skin, but make sure you don't do that too often or leave too long on your hair. otherwise your hair will be melted... i saw that happened to somebody, so that that girl had to cut very short ... like man's hair style... don't do that by yourself at home , unless you know what you are doing ... good luck...

depending on what type of hair you have, straightening can always be dangerous (hair brakage, hair loss) try to find the right straightener with olive and rosemary oil, lavender or jahoba to soften the hair and protect it.
